Wedding photographers - taking "candid" pictures

I sometimes find myself in an awkward moment at some point during a wedding.
Most couples like the candid/reportage style, and that's indeed when I get some of the best shots.
However, when walking around at a wedding reception trying to capture the guests being natural and oblivious to the camera, there are always some who are obviously uncomfortable with with the "paparazzi" style photography. Often they stop their conversation and don't know whether to pose of pretend to be unaware of the camera (I even had people telling me they don't want to be photographed).
Have you experienced similar situations? When you take pictures of the wedding guests, do you sneak around or interact with them? I guess an arsenal of jokes helps ease the tension, but that's not my greatest strength!
