Understanding lens format (mounts)

So, my friend is going to buy a D5000 from B&H. Being a Canon guy I'm want to make sure I am getting this right. The D5000 is a DX format, so any lense listed as DX would fit that body as well as the D90. The FX format is full frame and would fit only the full frame cams (D700-D3). Similar to Canon's EF-S and EF lineup, my EF lens will fit my 1D, 5D or my 40D. But the EF-S will only fit the 40D, (personally don't own any EF-S).
