L-plate or tripod collar?

Im considering to buy a Sigma 150mm, and wonder if it would be much better to use the tripod collar then an (rss) L-plate on my camera (D700)

will it be a lot more stable with the tripod collar or will the lens be 'heavy' on the mount for the d700?
(using a gitzo explorer with an rss ball head)
