Aperture - Wide Open
Apr 1, 2010

Dear all,

I am using the EFS17-55mm f2.8 lens. When using f2.8, the images sharpness is not as good as f4 or f5.6 even though I use the tripod. I believe this is a common symptom of most of the lenses, except the new EF 70-200mm f2.8 MK2.

Here are my questions:

1. What's the point to pay extra money for large aperture lenses, if it cannot produce sharpness image, especially the size is bigger and the weight is heavier.

2. When to use wide-open? Nowaday, a lot of camera are able to handle high ISO. We may use f4 or f5.6 with ISO 800 to ISO1600 instead of using f2.8 with ISO 100 -400. I know another reason is shallow DOF. Again if it cannot create the sharp images, it defeats the purpose.

Any comments?

Thanks,
GF
