Yes, you are correct that I have the built-in flash set to "not contribute". I haven't played around enough to determine if I would run into pre-flash problems, but I'm guessing with the arrangement I had set up at the time, I wouldn't have (i.e., I was maybe lucky). My camera was only 1-3 feet behind the studio strobes, and the rear of each strobe was pointing away from the camera, so the photocells were not directly "in-view" of the pre-flash, but picked up the hairlight flash just fine since it was so much brighter bouncing off the walls/ceiling.

I'll get a chance to get back to this in a few weeks, but my day job and and vacation have prevented me from continuing my foray into studio photography :-(.
