My Canon 7D malfunctioning..help

I don't know what happened but all of a sudden today the wheel by the top LCD screen stopped working. It was working on and off for while and now it isn't working at all anymore. Any ideas? or do I have to ship this to Canon? I'd like to avoid this if possible because it's a pain in the butt and I'll have to pay for shipping.
What can I expect for turn around time in Canada? I'm in Vancouver.
On a side note, I don't understand why Canon, being such a large companying cannot offer to pay for shipping for warranty services like most computer makers (e.g. Dell, Lenovo, Asus, etc...) when my camera costs more than my computer!
