What's the point in f1.4?
Mar 31, 2010

I've been trying out a Canon 50mm 1.4, and while I can see in principle how useful a low f number can be - it's always sold as useful in dark situations, I find that unless the light is really good, I just get images that are too soft (dreamy?) to really use.
The images only seem to become sharp around F2.8. and above.

Is it that to get that corresponding sharpness on another lens, I'd have to go up to maybe f5-ish?

If not, I can;t really see the point. To get a good image, it seems like I have to up the aperture and consequently the ISO, which seems to defeat the whole point.
