Do I buy another D300?

I am in quandry.

I sold my D300 a while ago as I could just not get decent photos with it on my 200-400VR lens. I have had both the lens and the body checked over by Nikon SA and have had the combination calibrated together. Still I found that my shots were nowhere as sharp as when uisng the 200-400 on my D3. Even using the 1.4TC with the D3 gave better results. The AF was also noticable slower than the D3. As I was not using the D300, I sold it.

I do however miss the extra reach that the DX body gives. We are going on a long Safari through Botswana, Caprivi and Namibia and I need to get a second body. Should I try the D300s? I understand that the AF is better.

Or should I get the D700 instead? It should give the same IQ as the D3 in a lighter body. I still have the grip from the D300 for when I need higher FPS. It is an FX body, though.
