The End of 4/3 in Hong Kong?
Mar 23, 2010

Going by the prices of 4/3 cameras in Hong Kong, it seems they are well going out of fashion!

Look at the latest prices in Fortress chain shops. Broadway have basically nothing and the sales assistants say they won't get more. Even used don't seem to sell easily as there is a E-510 body for HK$1,500 at a dealer's in Sham Shui Po and another couple in Sim City in Mongkok for around HKD1,700 and they have been there for weeks. Also the only Leica 4/3 is going for HKD4,500 second hand and it's been in the shop for months. Lenses? The chain shops have nothing worth mentioning, only the small independents hidden away in smaller shopping centres have anything. However, one of the most important shops selling mostly Olympus in Sim City just closed for good. Just one more shop left!

Great deals for anyone looking for a bargain, but a quick visit to Olympus's service centre (and mini-showroom) in Langham Place reveals onlt m4/3 and other cameras. When asked about future 4/3, nobody knows and you just get a smile.

The sales guy wearing the Olympus badge (i.e. the "expert" on Olympus) in Fortress said once the 4/3 stuff left in the shop was sold, they would not be getting more!

Hopefully not, but it looks like the OM camera situation again and the supplier is just closing another chapter of camera history. If Olympus don't have anything new for 4/3 soon are we on the Titanic of camera systems again?

What's the word from other places in the world?
