300 f2.8 IS or f4 IS for wildlife and nature photos?

I have been thinking about getting either one of the 300 IS lens and a 1.4 teleconverter to use with a crop body for nature shots. I want something compact so that I can carry my gear hiking.

My question. How many of you use this combination and stuck with it and why or how many have used this lens combination in the past but now use a different lens and why.

I know that the answer to this question will have a broad base of responses, but I value all your opinions and am looking forward to the replys. Thanks!
