not easy to get sharp bird photographs

For about two months I've been experimenting with bird photography, mostly with urban parrots. I use a 7D and a Canon 100-400 mm L. I feel that the zoom's reach is not enough to capture good details of the birds at the distance where I operate and I have to crop heavily in order to get something more or less usable. Furthermore, the birds mostly stay high in the trees, that means that a bright sky makes exposure quite difficult. I have to use high ISO and the result appears noisy. By the way, I take most photographs handheld. Should I better use a monopod for that kind of photography ?

Thanks for your help.
