Not Satisfied with the Tamron 17-50mm -- Replacement?

After spending months trying to decide which lens to get, the tamron 17-50mm won. Vignetting madness! Not only that, but it isn't quite as sharp as others had described. Hopefully when I tell b and h this they will let me return it.

If they do, what do you suggest I get for the same price? I am considering a canon 50mm 1.4. Thoughts?
