analysis of Canon lenses by release date
Mar 16, 2010

Thought that I would share the results of a brief geek out session. After compiling Canon's complete list of lenses by release year and month I jotted down a few trends/patterns that I have included below. I would like to include the complete list but the length exceeds what can be posted here. Cheers, Chad

Lens Release Analysis

Overall 2010-2006, 1999, 1996, 1991 and 1989-1988 were the best years for the release of new high quality Canon lenses. There were two especially prolific periods for Canon lens releases, the introduction of L lenses from 1991-1988 and the current period with ultimate refinement 2010-2006. I hope the current trend continues and I it produces the following lenses over the next few years: 24-70 f/2.8L IS, 50 f/1.4L, 85 f/1.4L, 35 f/1.4L II, 45 f/2.8 TS-E II, 90 f/2.8 TS-E II, along with ultra wide and super tele zooms. After these releases maybe a new DSLR platform or revolutionary lens material will drive new lens releases.

2010* is off to a great start with the 70-200 f/2.8L IS II is probably the best zoom lens produced or at least matches the current champ, the 70-200 f/4L IS

2009* three lenses of note, all specialty lenses (100 f/2.8L IS, 17 f/4L TS-E, 24 f/3.5L TS-E)

2008-2006* once again only three noteworthy lenses released each year, including the best optically performing lens to be produced to date 200 f/2L IS (24 f/1.4L II, 800 f/5.6L IS, 200 f/2L IS, 14 f/2.8L II, 16-35 f/2.8L II, 50 f/1.2L, EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS, 85 f/1.2L II, 70-200 f/4L IS)

2005-2000 new lens releases drop off during this period with fewer total number of lenses released and also fewer noteworthy lenses released per year. In 2004 EF-S lenses appear, Canon no longer produces cheap entry level EF lenses and instead produces cheap entry level EF-S lenses (24-105 f/4L IS, EF-S 60 f/2.8 Macro, EF-S 10-22 f/3.5-4.5, 17-40 f/4L, 24-70 f/2.8L, 400 f/4 DO IS, 16-35 f/2.8L, 70-200 f/2.8L IS, 100 f/2.8 Macro USM)

1999* Canon updates nearly all of their super teles with IS (600 f/4L IS, 400 f/2.8L IS, 65 f/2.8 1-5x Macro MP-E, 70-200 f/4L, 500 f/4L IS, 300 f/2.8L IS)

1998-1997 only two lenses of note each year (35 f/1.4L, 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L, 24 f/1.4L, 300 f/4L IS)

1996* Canon releases five excellent L lenses, what a year this must of been back in the day (135 f/2L, 180 f/3.5 L Macro, 17-35 f/2.8L, 400 f/2.8L II, 200 f/2.8L II)

1995-1992 Canon releases a small but steady stream of lenses that included only a few noteworthy lenses, and no new lenses were released in 1994 (70-200 f/2.8L, 28-70 f/2.8L, 1200 f/5.6L, 50 f/1.4)

1991* Canon releases eight high quality lenses that are still up to today's standards, a remarkably good year for Canon users (300 f/4L, 200 f/2.8L, 14 f/2.8L, 100 f/2, 400 f/2.8L, 90 f/2.8 TS-E, 45 f/2.8 TS-E, 24 f/3.5L TS-E)

1990 lots of lenses but none are noteworthy

1989-1988* high quality L lenses appear for the first time and what an amazing selection, the industry must of been really shocked by this collection (85 f/1.2L, 50 f/1.0L, 80-200 f/2.8L, 28-80 f/2.8-4L, 600 f/4L and last but not least 200 f/1.8L)

1987 not a lot of high quality lenses but nonetheless a massive number of new lenses with thirteen releases in one year
