A way to avoid jpg artifacts?

In order to have the same quality lossless print every time I print one of my scanned paintings worked on in Elements 8 (Mac), why can I not do the following? Save it straight out of Elements as a JPG, but in the highest possible quality, and NEVER use it again, EXCEPT to make a new copy from, EACH TIME that I want another print of my painting. That is, after each new printing of the painting wouldn't deleting the copy which I used to print it, ensure that each print-out of my painting would have the same original quality? I mean, I'm thinking that each time that I want a new print-out, all I'll have to do is make a new copy of the original JPG and use that. Am I right? I hope so, BUT it sounds too easy a solution...

(There must be a simpler way of asking this !! - in any case thanks in advance to anyone who cares to provide an easy-to-understand answer!)
