Ansel Adams B&W routine
Mar 8, 2010

Thought I would share this with you. Sadie Gibbery, a past President of the Photographic Society of South Africa and now member of our local society, gave us this routine for Ansel Adams B&W conversions:

It is a good idea to record this into an action to save you from going through all the steps manually every time.

Steps for Ansel Adams Black and White (Photoshop)

1. Image> Mode> Greyscale

2. Image> Mode> Duotone (Your photo must be in 8bit mode)

3. Type> Tritone

4. Ink 1 – Black
0 0%
50 31.3%
80 74.4%
100 100%

Ink 2 – Pantone Warm Grey 10C
0 0%
30 26.9%
60 45.6%
100 55.6%

Ink 3 – Pantone 422C
0 6.3%
10 12.5%
50 8.8%
100 0%

5. Save as Ink 2 “SGP Duotone” and Ink 3 “SGP Tritone”

6. Mode> Convert> RGB Color

Add a “Levels” adjustment layer and adjust sliders for black point, white point and midtones until you are happy with the tonality.

Experiment and remember not all photos make great b&w photos.

Always keep your words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat them.
Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.
Foveon - an ounce of image is worth a pound of performance!
