D90 vs. D5000 features - sticky note with full comparison
Mar 8, 2010

Since the question comes up here every week, here is a complete list of the features and advantages unique to each of the cameras to which we can just refer back rather than list them in bits and pieces over and over again :

...................................................................................................................

D90

1. 5 mm larger body, can be an advantage for big hands or when wearing gloves

2. Clearer, larger pentaprism viewfinder, better especially in low light and for manual focusing

3. 0.3” larger, higher resolution LCD display

4. Three more buttons, an additional command dial and an additional monochrome display on top for quick access to more settings without going through menus

5. Kelvin temperature selection in 31 steps

6. Storage of four white balance preset (vs. one on the D5000)

7. Built-in AF motor allows to auto-focus older and less expensive non-motorized lenses

8. Built-in 'Commander Mode' for wireless external flash control (requires accessory with D5000)

9. 0.5 frames per second more in continuous shooting

10. 850 shots per battery charge vs. 510

11. Depth of field preview button for those coming from analog SLRs or who don’t want to use LiveView or quick test shots for checking DOF

...................................................................................................................

D5000

1. 92 grams lighter

2. Tilt & swivel display convenient for low, overhead, self-portrait and tripod shots and for video, can be used like on any other DSLR (LCD folded against camera body) or closed for protection from scratches and smear

3. 19 scene modes

4. Quiet Shutter Release Mode for more discrete shooting where noise is an issue (theater, wild animals, sleeping babies, etc.)

5. Subject tracking in Live View

6. Interval timer

7. Auto Distortion Control Mode

8. Perspective control and trim to 16:9 and 1:1 via in-camera retouching

9. Stop motion movies
