5Dii mircroadjustment at different distances

Hey everyone - so last night i was trying to microadjust my 35mm 1.4 as the results werent as sharp as i could get with the AF compared to me doing MF. My problem was, id try it on something around 2m (trying to keep the 50 x focal length), would find a setting and get pretty close. THen id focus on somethign 4m away and would have to use a different setting, focus on something closer (say 1m) and was soft again.

Does anyone else find that at different distances the micro adjustment needs to be re-done? Or have i picked up a potentially dud lens?
