Entry Level DSLR

I have been looking at upgrading my point and shoot, but now I think I may want to get an entry level DSLR. I want something that I can effectively use as a P & S in the short term while I learn the other features of the camera. I do use some of the manual features on my Powershot S5 that I have now. I am leaving an a trip to Nepal in 3 weeks, so I want to be sure that if I buy this I will be able to use it effectively on that trip.

Any suggestions or recommendations?
