Verdict: Kept the Tamron 18-270 VC

Thanks for all the help, everyone.

I really wanted to keep the 18-250mm because it just felt much better: smooth zoom action throughout the focal range and no zoom creep. The 18-270mm has tightness (zoom mechanism) in the middle of the focal range quite a bit of zoom creep...in fact, it's very difficult to zoom in when the lens is tilted up (friction + gravity), and difficult to zoom out when lens is tilted down.

But, in the end, I kept the 18-270mm and sold the 18-250mm.

I didn't do formal tests. Instead I used both lenses in similar situations for a few days. I found that the 18-250mm did seem to have a slight edge in resolution at fast shutter speeds. But I found that I did lose more than a couple of shots with it from camera shake. In real world situations, I get a lot more lens shake than when I was first testing it (the 18-250mm).
