Generally I use the 50mm f1.4G for most walk arounds with the D700 (with other lenses in the bag)

If am out with the kids and want to carry only one lens then I have either the 24-120mm or a recently acquired AF-S 24-85mm.

The 24-120 is fine and does what I need with general children shooting; however, I prefer the 24-86 AF-S lens even though it is plastic and not metal like the 24-120. Will be selling the 24-120 shortly as I can live without the extra length; but this is just a "feel" preference - the 24-120 is a good (inexpensive) lens to pick up S/H.
