Selling DSLRs is easy
Feb 11, 2010

The most recent list of best-selling cameras ( ) demonstrates four very clear principles.

i. The market, while dominated by canikon, is open to products from other manufacturers, with 4 of the top 25 slots taken by Pentax and Panasonic

ii. Cost and pixel resolution are not the primary determinant for commercial success. The D700 is in there, as is the GF-1

iii. Video is an essential feature for new cameras. None of the recent entries in the top 25 miss video.

iv. The market is not dominated by low-end models, but rather mid-high range.

What does seem to be important is decent all round performance (with all the standard features like MLU DOF etc.) and good iso performance. Superfast fps seems less critical, as many cameras in the list are pretty slow. Fast LV AF is clearly not a critical feature.

In this market, a K-x type body based on the A700 but with main sensor LV and manual controlled video would have kicked butt at $800-900. A low resolution FF fast DSLR would probably also do well, if supplied with a video function.

None of the current sony dslr lineup meet the criteria required, as they lack video and basic features. With a small tweak they could have been great, indeed the A550 if it had video, MLU and DOF preview would have done very well indeed.

At PMA we will see if Sony are wise enough to see what’s obvious. Their current strategy is a total failure, but there is a lot of potential in this market, in-built IS is still a very attractive feature and with the right product they can do well. Right now I am deeply sceptical about the sony dslr management, and feel they are still skating to where the puck was 2 years ago, as opposed to where it will be. It’d be a lot more interesting if I’m wrong…
