How to fix a somewhat sticky Bogen ballhead?

Over the last couple of years my Bogen-Manfrotto 488RC2 ballhead has become more sticky. I believe this is just due to normal wear-and-tear, with whatever is used to keep it smooth wearing off. Does anybody know if there is a generally accepted practice for restoring the smoothness of the ball (and potentially the panning action as well)?

One thought I had was to use a small amount of dry graphite lubricant so as to not gum up the mechanism due to future accumulation of dust and dirt. I do quite a bit of outdoor related photography, so keeping it super clean is not always practical.
