So I did some tests and they work just fine. I flipped the flash to the vertical position and selected the next higher and to left AF point. The flash emits a larger grid assist beam. It takes maybe a second longer to lock focus from time to time but nothing that is not tolerable. The images are sharp which is the most important part.

I'll still keep looking for ST-E2 and if I can find one for a good price I may pick it up. However technically when in vertical you are usually focusing in the upper half of the frame when shooting people. Saves the focus recompose step.

The solution is always simple. Getting there is the hard part.
