The doughnut shaped out-of-focus effect can be a real charm for some situations.

I once made a picture of the tallest "christmas tree" in the world (actually a television broadcast mast of over 360 meters tall) from some kilometers distance, and played with the out-of-focus effect; because of the doughnut effect, the lights became lovely illuminating "balls and rings".
...a matter of taste I suspect...
