50mm on DX vs 85mm on FX

Always read people recommending a 50mm lens on a DX body as a poor man's 85mm or portrait lens. Using a couple of old friends I decided to test it out in more practical terms.

Not a test for accurate color or sharpness or noise. Just wanted to see the practical differences in depth of field and background focus area between DX and FX with the respective lenses.

Focus was on the Nikon name plate at about 3.5-4 feet. Background subject about 2 feet behind the main subject. And the background 2 feet behind the second subject. Distance would be about what one would use to frame a tight head shot.

Photographed from tripod. Slight composition differences due to the height difference between the DX and FX bodies used to capture the test images. Manual focus and exposure.
