Photo Shop

I currently use DPP to process my RAW files then ship the jpegs over to i photo as I am a Mac user, I tried a trial version of Aperature but didnt realy get to grips with it. My question is I am rather confused where to start with Photo Shop and whats the cheapist way, can i simply buy element 8 and off I go or do i need an earlier version to support it.
