The other alternative is to not use it wide open. Try f4 and it might be fine. If you're outside, f8 may look great! I have a lens that I'm often annoyed with when used wide-open, but get it to f8 (and often less), and I love it.

Although I'm sure lab-testing is ideal, the bottom line is how something looks to you.

If you buy a lens with a aperture of 1.4 or 2.8, you buy it because you want to take pictures with 1.4 or 2.8. So they have to be good at this aperture.
If i want to take pictures ad f8 every lens will do.
