is dSLR needed for promo shots?

Hello,
I'm now working for a printing company who is looking to re-build their photo archive of product samples for use on our website and for printed brochures.
We have used a 3MP point & shoot and had an employee bring in their personal Nikon dSLR. The quality of the 3MP is below par these days and we shouldn't rely on an employee's personal equipment.
I'm trying to decide whether or not a high resolution PS will suffice or if it would be more wise to invest in a dSLR.
We're shooting inanimate objects mostly under flourescent lighting. The pictures really need to capture texture and detail with good clarity. We are a printing company so if we're not handing someone the actual product, whatever reproduction of it needs to look as good as possible given the medium used (web/sell sheet/brochure).
I had initially started looking at dSLR's (Nikon D3000, Canon Rebel, Pentax K-x (local camera shop said Pentax is in bankruptcy?), Oly E620, etc...). Not sure where to look at PS, maybe Canon G10 or 11, Lumix ZS3, ?
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!
