Nikkor 70-300 AF-S VR Alternative?

Is there a lens that comes close to this for the money? I can get this lens for around $500 and question if it is the only choice.

I need 300mm and the VR feature. I can't seem to find an alternative. This may be a good sign that I'm headed in the right direction. The price does not thrill me.

Thoughts?
