Nikon 50/1.4g vs. Tamron 60/2?
Dec 27, 2009

Hi all,

did anybody tried to compare Nikon 50/1.4g vs. Tamron 60/2 on DX camera. I want a portrait lens about 60mm long. The Nikon 50/1.4 is known for not being very sharp at widest aperture on DX and macros are known to be quite sharp so I'm interested in comparison of 50mm at f/2 vs. 60mm at f/2 (or whatever the lens allows at the portrait distance, it could be like f/2.3) and also at f/2.8. I'm not interested in apertures over f/5 where my 18-105vr does excellent job due to VR and it is sharp enough.

According to reviews I have seen (most are linked in this thread: ), the Tamron could be quite good, but no review I know of allowed direct comparison with Nikon 50/1.4g.

I do not need macro as I have good macro on Canon G9 (and even more magnification with attached raynox msn-202, see ).

Other alternatives I will consider are

  • Voigtlander 58mm/1.4 (manual focus - that would also require katzeye focus screen for reliable focusing on my D90 body).

  • Nikon 85/1.8 (the 1.4 is out of my price range) but it seems to me it is too long for indoor use on DX, it also has distracting bokeh.

I currently have DX lenses only: 10-24, 18-105vr, Sigma 30/1.4 and I plan to stay on DX.
