canon 70-200 f4 IS and Lens Coat

I received this wonderful lens for Christmas. First I have to say WOW . Yes it really is sharp and simply everything I've read about it. I can see that I'm going to really enjoy this lens. In addition to the lens I was given the lens coat neoprene covering. I tried putting the coat on the lens but found that everything was tight. The focus and zoom rings moved smoothly but were tight. So I took it off. I did not try using this configuration on the camera. I was afraid that it could damage the lens.

Has any one here had experience with this or any other lens using this neoprene covering?
