******* Results of Challenge 92 - 'Black & White' ********
Dec 20, 2009

Thanks very much to all of you who submitted entries to the latest Challenge! There were 41 entries plus one really excellent photo of a vintage plane that was entered by Quarryman just for C&C. It was a lot of fun looking at them individually as they were posted and again this weekend viewed as a group when I was doing the judging.

First a review of a few of the runners up photos that didn't quite make it onto the winners podium followed by the top 3 photos

Runners Up (In no particular order)

'Simple Portrait' by Scotts 11

A beautifully subtle and simple B&W portait - it's a photo that really grew on me the more I looked at it. The eyes are so important in portrait photography and, here, those eyes have a real haunting, wistful look that is enchanting.

'Flight to Infinity' by IlanS

I really loved these flying pelicans and the reflections in the water.

C&C - for me the sky is not really as strong as the water and weakens the overall impact of the photo. What do the rest of you think?

'Multnomah Falls' by Knoal

A very dramatic composition of these beautiful waterfalls in Portland.

'Elegance' by DezM

That's a wonderful photo Dez! - I particularly liked the position of the moon(or is it a very bright star?) in the overall composition.

'End Of The Road' by k5mitch

A poignant image! - I loved the B&W processing of the fish which I thought was really excellent but I felt the surrounding pebbles looked too dark. I realise you may have been trying to heighten the contrast with the fish but feel it's gone a bit too far there.

'Flatiron Building-NYC' by Minds eye2

A very strong architectural image that I felt had the edge over the photo of the Eiffel Tower by jpw 2008. It's a building I'd love to get the chance to photograph for myself one day!

C&C - I'd prefer to have seen a bit more ground at the bottom for context (see Steichen's classic version!)and the building feels a bit tight at the top of the frame but I realise it can't have been easy getting the perspective looking as good as that.

Top 3 Photos

3rd Place

'Trinity' by IokuaLee

Great light in this image and wonderful contrasting tones!

2nd Place

'naked' by maxjaguar

The simple composition of this image gives it so much power. I loved the textures in the leaf canopy and the placement of the single dead tree.

Winner

'The Mesh' by Rundadar

Congratulations Alex! - This is a wonderful example of B&W photography at it's best. The opposing feet really tie the composition together and add a very endearing touch of humanity to what is a fantastic image.

The play of shadow and light is just brillaint and reminded me of Alexander Rodchenko at his very best:
