50% drop in jpg file sizes on the new G11... WHY?
Dec 10, 2009

Comparing identical photos taken by my G9 (12 MP) and the new G11 (10 MP) the .jpg file sizes are 50% (or more) smaller on the G11. The pixel density difference between the two sensors is about 20% so one would expect about a 20% drop in file size from the G9 to the G11... but a 50% drop is a big surprise! What happened?

Two test photos using the same settings (resolution, ISO, speed, f/stop, etc.) taken within a minute of each other vary greatly in file size: the G9 is 6.36 MB and the G11 is 3.11 MB. The two actually appear to be identical even at a full 100% view with little or no discernable difference in resolution.

I called Canon for several reasons and happened to mention this difference. The tech did some experiments and finally agreed that there was a disproportionate reduction in file size but couldn't offer any explanation.

Is there a new file compression system at work here?
