Pixel Density Gap Observation

Looking through the DPR camera database I noticed that there are few, if any, currently produced digital cameras with pixel densities between about 5 and 23 MP/ square centimeter.

Interesting how market forces, the legacy the old 35 mm film size, and technology seem to have conspired to eliminate a reasonable continuum or "mid grade" pixel density with a median of around 10 MP/square cm.
