What 2.8 zoom for basketball?
Dec 9, 2009

I've shot a fair amount of high school football games but I don't have much experience shooting basketball. I shot a game yesterday with my 85mm f/1.8. I used ISO 1600, f/2.8 and 1/500.

I was shooting from 3rd row of the stands at mid court. The 85mm (DX Crop sensor) was a good length for that location. If I get up to the corner by a basket, it's much too long, tho. Ideally, a 35-100 f/2 zoom would do the trick but it does not exist. I'd like a f/2.8 zoom that is at least 50mm wide and at least 70mm long. While the 85mm is a light lens, larger heavier lenses are not a problem.

The 24-70 f/2.8 would be a good choice (A little short) but it's too darn expensive. I have a 50mm f/1.8 but it's too wide for anything but corner shots of players in the paint.

Any ideas? I definitely need a lens that is sharp at f/2.8.
