At 16-ft., 85mm will make a fine portrait lens. It won't give enough field of view for team shots, but should be about right for isolated shots of individual players.

My 85 f/1.8 does not get much use because it is too long for indoors. The last time it got used was for some baby portraits. I was around 8-ft. away for full-length portraits of a 6-month old. Outdoors where there is more room, the 85mm focal length works well.
