Birders Sadvice

I am looking at getting into bird/animal/wildlife photography with my 50D am would like some suggestions on purchasing a lens.

I was initially looking at the Canon 100-400mm L however it is a little bit more than I want to spend. And yes I know you get what you pay for and some had suggested the Canon 400mm 5.6 but I do want the zoom capability.

So are there any alternatives without a big loss in IQ?

What about the Sigma 150-500mm? How does this lens work in early morning or early evening time seeing how it only goes to f6.3?

I would really like to thank all of you for your help!
