A550 conclusions - buying decision
Nov 19, 2009

I am seriously considering selling my A100 and buying the A550. From reading the available reviews and from info put forth on this forum I would conclude the following pros and cons for the A550:

  • Image Quality: ISO 400-12800 – best in class, equal of pro level

  • Image Stabilization for all lenses

  • LCD display – best in class, equal of more expensive cameras.

  • Live View – best of all cameras made, all classes.

  • Body – better than A3xx series, about equal to A100.

  • Responsiveness – best in class

  • Frame Rate – best in class, equal of more expensive cameras.

  • Image Quality: ISO 200 – average for class

  • OVF – average for class, much better than A3xx series, about equal to A100

  • Weatherproofing – average for class

  • Menu / Buttons – average for class

  • No video

  • No MLU

  • No DOF

  • No ISO 100

  • OVF – not as good as A700

  • Body – not as good as A700

  • No AE lock for spot metering

  • No Program Shift mode

Some of these features will be more or less important to every user but does this seem like a fair and reasonable summary on which to make a decision? If you loved your A100, would you ‘move up’ to the A550?

'Better' is the enemy of 'Good Enough'.
