What's with the Japanese and the letter G?

Just a question no-one is asking

Canon has G-series compacts, Sony has G lenses, Panasonic has named their µ4/3 cameras G-series and the lenses, if not Leica, are G.. Now Casio came up with a G compact shockproof cam. And Ricoh has GR,GRX cameras.. and so did Samsung with their DSLRs, GX... etc. Huh?
