Wiggett's 7D test-results confirmed/explained

The Digital Picture review shows that "The 7D images are softer than the other DSLRs at the same (DPP) sharpness settings - repeated testing confirms this.. Also noticable is that sharpening also sharpens the noise, which makes it more apparent. Thus, egual sharpness results in the 7D loosing some of its lead in the high ISO noise comparison." That explains why Darwin Wiggett got sharper pics from the 450D than with the 7D, when using zero sharpening in DPP.
