Another 7D Air Show Thread - Nellis 2009

I own a 20D and a 1D Mk. III, and recently picked up a 7D, just days before the Nellis show. Being adventurous, I decided to take only the 7D because I didn't want to haul around a ton of equipment.

I haven't even cracked the manual, and just fiddled with it a little bit based on what I knew of previous Canon cameras. I was a little disappointed in the noise, and I would not be surprised to learn that there are settings I could use to change this, but it's not a show stopper by any means, from what I can tell so far. Overall the Mk. III images look a bit smoother to me, which isn't too surprising.

It's focusing seemed fine to me, although I'm not sure distant moving objects are that much of a challenge. I liked the additional megapixels for cropping, the extra reach of the 1.6 crop, and the viewfinder as well.

These shots were captured in Tv mode, ISO250, and using a Canon 100-400L IS USM lens, and are all processed, mostly by cropping, downs-sizing then a touch of sharpening, and in a very few cases, some small levels adjustments. For speed and convenience, I shot directly to JPEG (as I do on the Mk. III) and none have been run through any noise-removal processes nor had their saturation adjusted.

The layout of the field has us shooting into the sun most of the day, so exposure is difficult, and not knowing the camera very well, I didn't really make any adjustments and just stuck with the default metering (weighted center, etc.).
