18-35 - cheap and pretty good but corners never get sharp

Lack corner sharpness isn't necessarily a big deal in a long zoom (see the 70-200VR discussions...), but with a wide lens, it can be an issue. I'd rent or borrow an 18-35 and see if you can accept the always-there corner softness on FX. It just never gets sharp in the corners. Other than this, is a very nice lens - acceptable sharpness in the center, good color and contrast, and light weight/small size, especially for this type of lens.
