The m4/3 LIE...
Nov 4, 2009

m4/3 is the smallest and lightest HQ alternative to a DSLR. No.

4/3 vs. m4/3
Body: e420 - 380g / EP-1 - 335g
pancake: 25mm - 95g (64x23.5mm) / 20mm - 100g (63x25.5mm)

std: 14-42mm - 190g (65.5x61mm) / 14-42mm - 150g (62x43.5mm) Pan 195g (60x60)
tele: 40-150mm - 220g (65x72mm) / 45-200mm - 380g (70x100mm)

S/T: 4/3 - 885g / m4/3 - 965g (w Pan std - 1010g)

The only area where 4/3 falls behind is in the Wide Zoom. Oly's 4/3 7-14mm is a monster, but if you can live with the 9-18mm instead it is lighter and smaller than the Pan 7-14mm (300g vs 275g).

I have put together a 4/3 system that is smaller and lighter than the m4/3. You loose 2mm on the wide end and 50mm on the tele end, but a get OVF and DSLR Auto Focus (so I don't have to shoot with my arms stretched out in front of me). I'll take that trade off (especially since I have a D300 kit as my main system), and save myself a pile of cash that I can use towards the main HQ system. As much as people are hyping m4/3, you really are not getting much (if anything) compared to 4/3, and you are definitely paying a premium for it. At this time all you are getting is video.
