Have I been suckered by marketing?

ohhh, perish the thought ;-)...
From a review on Amazon for the Nikon 18-200mm VR II
"The use of "VR II" in the name is potentially misleading because it may lead shoppers to believe that the VR system has been improved over the original model. This is not the case. Both the original 18-200 and the new version contain Nikon's second generation VR system. Some have suggested that Nikon's marketing is a bit shady on this point while others counter that the "II" simply designates a new model. "
Wow, I actually consider myself a savvy shopper, but if what is stated above is indeed the case (no difference between the VR capability), then I have been the sucker of marketing.
If the only real difference is the cam lock, then wow, I really am a sucker. While, I do not think I am in the neighborhood of buying this lens, I always research the 'similar' areas. I still think I am closest to the 17-105 and if it has the 2nd gen VR, then I think the decision is made...
