S90 RAW images converted via DPP
Oct 17, 2009

Picked up an S90 at Best Buy yesterday and have not read the book or done much experimenting with settings since I have used Canon for years and felt somewhat comfortable selecting Av priority, setting the ring to ISO (auto ISO selected), metering to evaluative, auto WB and set record to RAW, and headed out late afternoon to get some shots in the light, and then the setting sun and night shots for testing. The stuff in the S90 gallery is certainly NOT presented for artistic merit, only to share to couple of first day walk around shots at different light levels and ISOs. If anything, I would say I selected "targets" for presenting difficult dynamic ranges and subjects. Canon DPP 3.7 was used for conversion and no I did not do any processing other than all the default settings. One side note to that is it seems the S90 camera imbeds in the RAW image a setting it would like for DPP to use for default sharpening of each picture, as each image chose a different default preselected. I have not used the camera in AUTO mode yet, but expect to today.

Comparing the images to what I used to get from my F31fd I can't say the low light stuff is any better or worse at this point. There are some Noise Ninja processed jpegs in my Ultimate China and other 2008 trips you can check for yourself for comparison. After converting the S90 base images to jpeg and uploaded them to SmugMug I went pack and used DPP to reduce noise, fix the blown highlights and low light areas and converted the files to TIF images to finish processing later in LR2.5. If I have a chance I will do some work on that and post to my site later today or tonight in a seperate file. The low ISO (daylight) stuff is very, very good with great colors and detail. I would say they are every bit as good as any jpeg I got from either my previous G9 or G10.

Have a look and feel free to post your thoughts.......................

If the link does not take you to the images use http://www.martindareff.com to get to my site and go to "other" and the S90 gallery will be there.
