Are these HDR images over-the-top?

Cambodian temple in NE Thailand. Sun was going down directly behind, so there was very great dynamic range in the scene (if I exposed for the sky, the temple ruins were almost complete shadow). So I tried HDR. My girlfriend doesn't like the colours in the 'close-up' (2nd shot),but another friend likes it (and prefers it to the black and white version). Just curious what others think... Thanks
