Yet another 15-85 "test" thread w/ largish images
Oct 14, 2009

Just got my 15-85 today and took it for a little test ride with my 7D. I compared it with my 17-55 and, generally, it held its own very well when compared at equal apertures.

Overall, I really love the lens for a walk-around...I have no issue shooting it wide open, there is a little CA, but very easily correctable (nothing like the 17-85). Feel and handling are great. I can't imagine it loosening to the point of drooping. IS is about silent and I can't hear it operating in a recorded movie (unlike my 24-105) which is fantastic. Focus is great...no cal necessary and not a single miss out of about 100 shots.

Corners look quite good for a fairly wide zoom...better than the 24-105 was on the 5DII which was pretty good. Similar to the 17-55.

All but the last image are full frame resized all to 1920 wide (full desktop res for me) and applied a 1 pixel focus magic to regain sharpness. For some of the ISO3200 shots, I used a little Noiseware to smooth the darker areas.

The first set are in my front yard...note this was at twilight, so it was actually pretty dark in the woods. All shots shown were handheld...the IS is very good.
