Repair or Replace EFS 17-85mm
Oct 11, 2009

My son's EFS 17-85mm lens is no longer zeroing in on an accurate focus. It hunts back and forth close to accurate focus, but is not able to lock in on an accurate focus, causing the majority of images to be OOF. We were able to pin the problem on a particular lens as we have several bodies and another identical EFS lens for another son's body.

This lens is being used on a 20D body exclusively. The camera continues to be a work horse and all other lenses work fine.

I have never had to repair a lens... this one is about $450 new these days... is it likely a good investment to ship to Canon for repair? My thinking is that I'd prefer a $150 repair bill to a new lens, but only if it's realistic to expect the problem would be solved and the lens would behave "like new" after repair. Any thoughts on this?

Thank you.
