Why even use RAID?
Oct 6, 2009

I was told that even RAID 1 using consumer grade HDD is not recommended. It has something to do with how it performs error checking on the disks. I'm led to believe that you can lose data on both HDD if an error is detected on one of the HDD. If using RAID 1 is so precarious (RAID 0 definitely is based on what I have read), then why use a RAID 1 setup at all? I understand if you use enterprise level HDD, the error checking is not as catastrophic?

It would seem the way to go is to use a non-RAID setup when it comes to a home PC setup. I was told that error checking on a non-RAID siingle HDD is not as severe (less chance to lose your data) as error checking on a RAID 1 or RAID 0 setup. Your thoughts on this?
