Well, I've never had a 40D, I did have a 10D years ago, so I can't really comment on that comparison. I think it depends alot on using the appropriate settings. I used centre point with expansion most of the time and had really good results, and I'd like to play a bit more with zone AF, which is supposed to favour the nearest subject. This might be handy in quite a few situations. There are so many options and the best one to chose will vary from one situation to the next.

Also I havn't spent much time playing with the 1D series, but all in all I'm very impressed with the AF on the 7D, and will happily use it for wildlife in future.

As for the marine biology- yes it is a great job with some wonderful moments, although a great deal of it is not as glamorous as you might image. Think mud and worms. and statistics....
